Maybe I'm getting philosophical as I get older, but I’ve been spending a lot of time lately thinking about what a designer does. I take a space, and I put things in there, and then I arrange it all to look comfortable and pretty.
But for all the pretty things I search for and sell, what I do isn’t about the “things" — it’s about the room. It’s about rooms for families to get together, for friends to drop by, for a husband and wife to sit contently, for a person to draw her feet under her as she reads a book. As you design, that is the one gift I want to leave you. You’re not designing for Pinterest, you’re designing for friends and families.
And Christmas is the same way. Make sure that every stocking you hang, every candle you light, every gift you wrap is to make someone happy — even, maybe especially, if that person is only you.
